Storing Up Treasures In Heaven

June 28th, 2017

I was rushing around the basement trying to get everything ready for the big delivery. I had just finished washing all my plates, glasses, and cutlery. They were all wrapped in newspaper and strategically placed in large bins so that nothing would break. All of my blankets and towels had been washed, dried and folded into boxes. Every piece of furniture, along with everything I owned, had been pushed towards the entrance way, ready to be picked up. Continue reading “Storing Up Treasures In Heaven”

Our Journey Begins: 7 Signs and Wonders

The journey to cycle east around the world was not a rash decision nor was it done impulsively. When I received my first invitation from God to start traveling east around the world (read Our Journey Begins: The First Call) I was immediately put on edge. The last time I’d attempted to embark on a bike trip without God’s invitation or blessing it had nearly killed me (read A Failed Bike Tour). I had absolutely no intention of making the same mistake twice. So for me to even consider acting on such a grand task, I needed to make sure that it was God sending me and not my own selfish ambition or vain conceit. So I asked God to make it abundantly clear to me that He was sending us. God chose to answer my request by sending me an additional six signs and wonders so that I could know with confidence that this dream was His heart for me.

“Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;” (2 Peter 1:10)

The Journey Begins: The First Call

This story begins with a young married couple in a small basement suite in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Matt and I had been living a quiet and simple life for the last year.  Matt was attending college to become an aircraft maintenance engineer. I was working full-time as a dental receptionist to support him and pay the rent. We were enjoying this season of our lives and getting quite comfortable with our routine. Money was tight but our life was filled with love, joy, and peace. Every evening we were among friends playing board games, meeting for bible studies, and participating in the free social events at Church of the Rock. We could see the direction that our lives would take over the next few years. Matt would graduate and get a job in his trade. Then it would be his turn to support me as I finished my masters degree. When our careers were established we would start having children. This was the dream we were pursuing and I was excited for my future. There was just one problem. Late at night when my mind was quiet, there was a restlessness in my spirit and a whisper that said,

I have so much more to show you. Come and see. Continue reading “The Journey Begins: The First Call”

Courage

I’m sure everyone can agree with me that it takes courage to approach a group of strangers with the hope of making new friends. In September of 2013, I made the difficult decision to lay down my dream of biking to the ocean, and instead, decided to listen to God and go find my friends. So I went looking for a new church. I had my eyes set on one particular place called Church of the Rock. It was a pretty large church, much larger than the one I had grown up in. In fact, it was one of the largest in the city. Surely there must be someone my own age there, I thought to myself.

A Failed Bike Tour

The first time I left on a bike tour, I almost died. It was 2013, and I was having the worst summer of my life. I had just graduated university and I was so discouraged and over-worked that all I wanted to do was escape. I would stay up late at night dreaming of being free, alive, and as far away from my current surroundings as possible. In my mind that freedom was on a bicycle. A place where I could be outside all day, everyday, and be physically active from sunrise to sundown. I wanted to feel the distance between myself and my home. I wanted to feel every mile and every hill, and experience the world in a unique way. I would imagine myself cycling all the way to the ocean and then falling down on the beach exhausted. That was my dream. Continue reading “A Failed Bike Tour”
